Boarding School

Having never gone away to summer camp, moving into a dorm my freshman year in high school was my first time living away from home. A roommate (or 3)! No parents! Decorating my half of the room how I wanted! The possibilities were endless. My mom took me to Bed Bath and Beyond (this was before the days of Target, I might point out), and we found a reversible comforter in pink and purple Hawaiian print, a lime green plastic shower caddy (which I still have to this day), and twin-extra-long flannel sheets. My wonderful roommate from Maine and I decided to use our newfound freedom to cover our walls with hot guys from the Abercrombie and Fitch catalogs. For a short stint my sophomore year I was on the bottom bunk in a quad room and used sarongs as curtains. I decided at a yard sale my junior year that Power Rangers were retro-cool and got some extremely loud sheets. Senior year my laundry bag holder finally fell apart for good and I resorted to throwing dirty clothes in the closet. The door had been opened to a world of desk lamps and pastel trashcans, and the attempt to cover every square inch of wall space with a poster or picture.
